NUTS AND BOLTS:
Most “frozen” nuts and bolts can be removed with a socket spanner set because this can usually provide sufficient leverage even to shear the bolt, if necessary. But socket spanner sets are expensive, and not usually part of a family tool set.
Again, try to get as much leverage as possible. The leverage of an ordinary spanner can be increased by slipping a length of metal piping over the end. Use freeing oil on the nut first, and note the following points:
• The spanner used must exactly fit the nut. A sloppy fit is not good enough. Equally, an adjustable spanner will not be suitable, for the same reason.
• It will almost certainly be necessary to hold the bolt-head against rotating, using another spanner of the same size.
• If the nut refuses to budge, or you cannot get a proper grip and leverage with the tools available, you will have to drill, saw or chisel the nut and bolt free.
